Stop and Shop and Whole Foods are two of the more well-known grocery stores in the industry. There are some clear differences between the two on the surface in terms of product type and customer base. However, where do they differ in price, quality, and product variety?
If you are deciding between these two grocery stores then chances are you are considered these factors as well. So in this article, I compared Whole Foods and Stop & Shop based on:
- Price
- Quality
- Variety
By the end of this article you should have a much better idea of which grocery store is right for you based on your shopping needs.
Which is Better: Stop and Shop or Whole Foods? Stop and Shop is cheaper than Whole Foods by about 18% to 75% across all commonly shopped food categories. However, Whole Foods does have significantly higher product quality, according to the FDA. In terms of options, each store has about the same amount of products available for customers to purchase.
Is Stop and Shop More Expensive Than Whole Foods?
Price point is arguably the biggest consideration factor when it comes to deciding which grocery store is right for you. Many customers like the store that is going to give them the most savings or the best bang for their buck.
So, I decided to compare the prices for store brand items at both Stop & Shop and Whole Foods to see which one is giving you the better deal. In other words, I compared these two stores to see which one is cheaper.

Stop and Shop was the clear winner. In other words, Stop and Shop is cheaper than Whole Foods by anywhere from 18% to 75% across all common shopping categories.
Unsurprisingly, Stop & Shop is the big winner in terms of price. Whole Foods is notoriously more expensive than most of the grocery stores. The main reason for this is that they sell organic and natural products which have a higher price point than other grocery items.
Above is a chart that compares the average prices for the store brand items in each shopping category. As you can see, Whole Foods towers over the stop and shop. This is a clear indicator that whole foods are significantly more expensive than stop and shop.
This means that if you are a customer who prioritizes saving, then stop and shop is the clear winner in terms of price.
Product Quality: Stop and Shop vs Whole Foods
The quality of product is also a big consideration when deciding which grocery store to shop at. Most consumers prefer going to the store that has higher quality products. It offers peace of mind and allows customers to know that they are buying quality goods.
To see which store offer is the best quality, I took a look at the FDA’s product recall database. This allowed me to see which store has had more recalls in recent years. The store with more product recalls is likely to be the one with lower quality products.
Category | Stop and Shop Recalls | Whole Foods Recalls |
Animal & Veterinary | 0 | 0 |
Biologics | 0 | 0 |
Cosmetics | 0 | 0 |
Dietary Supplements | 1 | 0 |

In terms of quality, Whole Foods beats Stop & Shop. Whole foods has had less product recalls in recent years which suggests that they have much higher quality and the items they sell.
Total Stop and Shop Recalls: 24
Total Whole Foods Recalls: 2
More specifically, Whole Foods has 1/12 the amount of product recalls in comparison to stop and shop. This is a substantial difference. Something else to note is that out of all the grocery stores that I’ve compared, Whole Foods has the least amount of recalls logged by the FDA. This is a sure sign that they carry high-quality products.
So if you are a customer that enjoys purchasing high-quality products, then you should shop at Whole Foods as they carry some of the highest quality products available to purchase in the grocery industry.
Product Variety: Stop and Shop vs Whole Foods
The amount of options that a customer has to choose from is also a big decision making factor. Although it may not be as important as price or quality, it still plays an intricate role in the decision making process.
The amount of product variety is essentially the total amount of products that a customer has to choose from. The store with more product variety is likely to carry significantly more products for the customers.
Total Stop and Shop Products | Total Whole Foods Products |
30,000 products | 30,000 products |
It seems as though both Stop & Shop and Whole Foods carry a very similar amount of items in each of their stores. So you’re likely to find most of the same types of items in each store.
For reference, the average grocery store holds around 31,000 products. So both of these stores are a bit shy of the average, but in general they are likely to have more than what you need.
Which One Should You Shop At: Stop and Shop vs Whole Foods?
When to shop at Stop and Shop: Despite not having the highest quality products, Stop & Shop’s biggest advantage is in its pricing. Across all shopping categories, Stop & Shop was the cheapest choice. So, if price is your biggest concern then you should be shopping at Stop & Shop.
When to shop at Whole Foods: if you don’t mind paying a little bit more for higher quality products than Whole Foods is your place to go. They have a negligible amount of product recalls which is very encouraging as it suggests that they have extremely high-quality products. You are not likely to find any low quality products at Whole Foods.
Final Thoughts: Whole Foods vs Stop and Shop
In terms of price and quality, Whole Foods and Stop & Shop couldn’t be more different. Stop and shop has a strong advantage in price and Whole Foods has a strong advantage and product quality. There’s a clear difference between the two.
As long as you know what type of shopper you are then it won’t be difficult to decide which one of these two stores is better for you.
