From the research it seems that in most categories, Wegmans tends to be cheaper. More specifically, Wegmans is cheaper in the beverage, dairy, dry foods, frozen foods, cleaners, and other categories. Whereas Harris Teeter is cheaper in the baking goods, canned goods, personal care, and cleaners categories.
With this in mind, you can plan what you want to buy so that you are able to shop at each and get the cheapest items possible. In other words, make a plan to buy the cheaper items at Wegmans and the other items and Harris Teeter.
Product Quality: Wegmans vs Harris Teeter
Another large factor in deciding which supermarket is superior is product quality. To see which store has better quality products, I looked on the FDA’s recall website to see which store has had more recent recalled items.
Essentially, between Wegmans and Harris Teeter, the store with the least amount of recent product recalls would be deemed as the store with higher quality products.

From the recall reports, it seems as though Harris Teeter has had less product recalls in recent years. This suggests that their product quality is a bit higher than Wegmans.
However, it must be noted that customer ratings contradict this. There are consumer studies that state that Wegmans has a 92% product quality rating and Harris Teeter has a 73% product quality rating from its customers.
Because both stores have a relatively low amount of product recalls, and they have very high customer product quality ratings, they both are quite equal in their overall quality.
In other words, they both offer great quality products. Regardless of where you shop, you will be able to purchase high-quality items.

Additionally, Wegmans has 18 different shopping categories, whereas Harris Teeter has 11 categories. This shows that Wegmans provides a wider range of product types to pick from. This also means that Wegmans likely has more niche products you could be looking for.

Regionally, Wegmans is based in the Northeast US and Harris Teeter is based in the Southeast US. From what I found, they are not located in the same states.
Both stores are located within a similar amount of states, however, Harris Teeter has more than double the amount of locations that Wegmans does. So chances are, you are more likely to see a Harris Teeter than a Wegmans in their respective regions.

With all of this information in mind, which store should you shop at. Well, if you boil it down, it is quite simple.
When to shop at Wegmans: If you are looking for more affordable groceries (in most categories), and prefer a lot of product variety, then Wegmans is best for you. They are also available in more states than Harris Teeter, making their reach a bit larger.
When to shop at Harris Teeter: If you prefer higher product quality, then Harris Teeter is your best choice. Something to note is that they have more than double the amount of Wegmans locations, so depending on where you shop, there are likely to be more Harris Teeters available.
