The price point of products is something that many shoppers consider as the most important factor when it comes to deciding where to shop. Majority of shoppers would prefer the store that has the most affordable prices, or offers the most value for every dollar spent.

To see what store has cheaper prices, I took a look at the most commonly purchased storebrand items from each store. Then average out the prices and put them into categories. The table below shows which store is cheaper for each common shopping category.

I arguably just as important as the price, product quality is something that a majority of shoppers also consider. Customers want to know that what they are buying is safe.

So to figure out which store has higher quality products, I took a look at the FDA’s product recall database. This database shows which store has had more product recalls in recent years. Through this we can see which store has lower quality products.

Category Harris Teeter Recalls Kroger Recalls
Animal & Veterinary 0 2
Biologics 0 0

While all of Harris Teeter‘s product recalls are within the food and beverages category, Kroger has recalls in a total of four different recall categories.

So if you are someone who prefers to purchase higher quality goods, then Harris Teeter is where you should shop.

Product Variety: Harris Teeter vs Kroger

Lastly, product variety is also something that customers consider. While it may not be as important as price or quality, it does play a role in which store people shop at. So, which store has more products to pick from?

For reference, both of the stores are considered supermarkets so we should expect that each of them sell a similar number of items at their install locations.
